Co-President’s Thoughts

Thanksgiving 2011 is now past, and we hope you all have an “attitude of gratitude” for the richness of your lives. We do indeed have much to be thankful for. We are thankful for: what AAUW stands for, our AAUW branch, each of our members, and what you contribute as a member.

Now the Christmas season is upon us with all its busyness. May it be a season of hope, love, peace, and joy. Remember our Christmas party at The Coffee House on Main Tuesday, December 13 at 6:30 p.m., and bring a children’s book to share with a needy child.

We are looking for a couple members to serve on the nominating committee. If you have been in AAUW for a few years and feel you know who might be a good fit for our offices, this is a job for you. Please let one of us know if you would be willing to serve on this committee.

Since there will be no January newsletter we’ll take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year and all the best in 2012. We look forward to a great year in AAUW!

Co-President’s Thoughts

Our lifetime member Gudrun (Gudy) Bulger will be turning 90 on November 16! Let’s shower her with birthday cards. She is a resident at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home, 400 – 15 Ave. SW. She would be so pleased to hear from you.

We were reminded at the October meeting at the Welcome Center that many recent residents here are not prepared for winter with warm clothing. If you have an extra coat or two, the Welcome Center would be happy to find a grateful recipient.

Our membership has passed the 60 mark now! If you know someone with a two or four year degree, please invite her to join us.

Since we are not hosting a candidates’ forum for the upcoming school board elections we encourage you to attend the League of Women Voters forum at City Council Chambers on Wednesday, November 2, at 7 p.m.

We have a website at aauwaustinmn.org.- thanks to Marie Lechelt, our webmaster. This website also has links to our state and national organization, as well as the other state branches. I hope you are all checking this occasionally.

Marijo and I would appreciate a couple volunteers to be on the nominating committee. We will both be finishing our second term in May. There may be an opening on program and on membership also. We have many very able women in our group who could easily fill these positions. Please volunteer if you’re willing to serve.

Travel Club Meeting

tanzaniaGail Minerich’s House

Gail will be presenting a DVD and photos from her Mission Trip to Kinampanda, Tanzania. While Gail was in Tanzania, she witnessed a traditional wedding, a funeral, and people struggling with AIDS, TB, and cancer. The trip was initiated as a way to meet, interact, and worship with members of Our Savior’s companion church in Kinampanda.

Co-President’s Thoughts

It was great to see so many of you at our September potluck that got our new year off to a good start. Thanks to Bonnie Rietz and Dani Heiny for leading the discussion on 2020 visioning for Austin.

And what a fabulous turnout for our house tour! Thank you to all who helped in any way. Most of all a big thank you to co-chairs Gerry Rustad and DedaRae Graber for their record setting results. The profits will be going for scholarships to Riverland Community College. Read more about this in a separate article.

We are trying our board meetings at 5:30 p.m. before the member meetings this year. Treats will be provided from 6:30 to 7:00, but you are also welcome to stay after the 7:00 p.m. member meeting for more social time. The October meetings will be at The Welcome Center, 308 – 4th Ave. NW. Please come and learn more about this very vital center for our area.

Our 2011-2012 member directories are expected to be ready by October 11.

Enjoy October in Minnesota – one of our most beautiful seasons!
